Process of the Creation of my Foundation Degree Collection: The Beginning

Today I received my Summer brief. There are 5 themes of which we are to loosely interpret, I have chosen the theme Decadent Drama. I have chosen this as I feel this is the theme that suits my aesthetic as I am drawn to luxurious garments, opulent interior design and detailed fabrics. I want to make decadent garments in the future when I’ve finished my degree as I have always been passionate about evening wear.  I’m tantalised by over-the-top and glamorous designs the first British Couture house picked for the Haute Couture show in Paris, Ralph and Russo. They create evening wear using fabric manipulations, lots of jewelled embellishments and 1950’s silhouettes. I take parts of silhouettes from different era usually between 1920’s-1970’s as I am inspired by the glamour, structure and pure femininity when I design and this is why I am so drawn to the work of Ralph and Russo as they use similar inspirations as me.  I enjoy creating fabric manipulation such as ruffles to create volume, working with jewelled embellishments to add sparkle and luxury to my designs and I enjoy sewing pleats as they add structure and create shape on a garment. I feel I can develop this year creating my final collection by looking at researching more historical references from eras I haven’t looked at before such as the 15th century. I tend to stick to the 20th century I want to push myself by learning from the Elizabethan era and creating a modernised version based from my own aesthetic . I am looking forward into researching the ins and outs of my theme such as the reasons why they wore certain colours, fabrics and how they showed their wealth and making it my own by evolving my project to dig deeper and find a unique theme of which speaks to me. I feel I can focus on this theme all year and really engross myself into my final collection.
